Should I be a Leader or a Manager?
20th-Century Management Thought taught decision-makers that there was a dichotomy between leadership and management. This contrast has led people to believe that the roles of leaders and managers are different.
When decision-makers apply this concept to operations, they only perform at 50% of their full potential. Integrating Leadership and Management skill sets has assisted our clients with performing at 100% of their full potential.
Management is the process of controlling resources in a planned and organized manner to achieve an individual’s or organization’s SMART Goals©. To achieve the management process, decision-makers must improve their conceptual skills. Conceptual skills are soft skills that help people understand complex situations and strategically develop creative solutions.
The two types of resources are human and material. Human resources are people's skills, knowledge, and abilities to perform specific tasks. Since this resource involves human beings, interpersonal and conceptual skills are required to manage human resources.
Interpersonal skills are the ability to interact and work positively with people in a manner that establishes strong relationships. Leadership is the critical component required to obtain interpersonal skills. Leadership is the life force that generates innovative methods to motivate people to achieve an individual’s or organization’s planned SMART Goals©.
Material resources are the equipment and supplies needed to complete tasks. Conceptual skills are necessary to plan, organize, and control material resources for monotonous procedures. However, when managing a material resource that requires interpersonal skills, leadership functions will be needed to select the right person for the task.
