Has your manager ever treated you differently than other managers who were of a different sex or race than you?
Does your manager compensate for his or her insecurities by targeting you because they feel your successes are eclipsing them?
Disparate Treatment occurs when a manager unequivocally treats an employee differently because of that person’s sex, race, religion, color, sex, or national origin.
The best way to mitigate disparate treatment in the workplace is to make diversity an organizational core value and train managers to overcome their personal insecurities.
This can be achieved by applying the Four of the Five Elements of Nature to leadership best practices:
1. Air (大気 ): Find Solutions- Managers should let go of people and situations that stimulate their insecurities.
2. Fire (火): Own It- Managers need to confront their feelings instead of avoiding them.
3. Water ( 水): Acknowledge Reality- Managers must embrace all their qualities and passions.
4. Earth (土): Meeting Expectations- Managers need to understand that having a team of employees of different races, genders, religions, and abilities can assist them with creating policies that encourage diversity in the workplace.
